Big Sing Songs

We know that music hubs love a big sing, they get loads of kids together to sing and have fun. But we also know that choosing songs can be tough – Sam wrote a blog about it here

We were really pleased to successfully apply to the East Riding Music Education Hub for one of their Partnership Commissioned Activities with a project called Big Sing Songs.

We worked with children from 5 primary schools and a special school to write songs suitable for the East Riding Big Sing and Little Big Sing. It was a fantastic opportunity to work with schools we had not visited before.

We had the chance to sit down with the team who organise the Big Sing events in the East Riding, who hadn’t been involved in the commissioning, and they were initially a little hesitant. It’s understandable – they programme the event and choose the songs, and they didn’t know what our songs would sound like, or even if they’d be any good!

They said they’d listen to them, and they might use one or two.

When we sat down with the National Big Sing team they were initially a little hesitant. It’s understandable – they hadn’t been involved in the commissioning process but they programme the event and choose the songs. Of course, they didn’t know what our songs would sound like, or even if they’d be any good! So they said they might use one or two of our songs…

…but they chose four!

The schools who wrote the songs had a great experience during that section of the project, but it was even better to know that thousands of children in Big Sing and Little Big Sing events sang them.

The groups singing the songs thoroughly enjoyed them and we’re sure they will become firm favourites in the assembly hall too.

“The project helped us to engage with more schools and deepen pupils’ musical understanding. Pupils passion and excitement for music was heightened and their knowledge and understanding of song writing was developed.”
